During this session we will discuss the Department of Health and Social Care’s recently published findings of the call for evidence on the statutory duty of candour. There were three prominent themes: culture of the health and care system, inconsistency in understanding and applying the Duty of Candour and the need for further training.
The discussion will be chaired by Carl May-Smith and Katie Viggers, and we will also hear insights from Charlotte Harpin, Jacqui Atkinson and other speakers with expertise in this field. We will cover the legal requirements of the statutory Duty of Candour and share resources, examples of best practice and practical advice to support organisations to:
- Create and embed a culture of candour.
- Support better understanding and application of the Duty of Candour from Board to Ward.
- Deliver effective training on the Duty of Candour.
- Monitor compliance and identify and tackle non-compliance, inconsistency, and training needs quickly and effectively.
We will also discuss the government’s suggestion of introducing a professional duty of candour for NHS managers in its public consultation on regulating NHS managers and the implications of this for professionals working in management roles in the health sector.
Delegates will have the opportunity to put questions to the panel and share learning and best practice.
