Browne Jacobson appoints former KPMG senior partner as Non-Executive Director of its Energy & Infrastructure sector group

04 January 2023

UK and Ireland law firm Browne Jacobson has announced the appointment of former KPMG senior partner, Andy Cox as its first Non-Executive Director (NED) of its Energy & Infrastructure sector group.

Andy, who is a highly experienced deal advisor, was previously the energy sector lead at KPMG where he spent 17 years as a partner and also as Head of the firm’s UK Transaction Services. He has worked with a broad range of clients, from major Asian investors, corporates, infrastructure funds and private equity houses, across power & utilities (including renewables and nuclear) and oil & gas. For several years, Andy was Global Lead Partner for bp p.I.c, supporting their ambitions to become an Integrated Energy Company.

Since departing KPMG, Andy has focused on the energy transition and undertaken several advisory roles including Senior Advisor to the executive team at Storegga (carbon capture and hydrogen developer).

Working closely with partner Declan Cushley who leads the firm’s corporate sector market group and partner and head of Browne Jacobson’s Energy & Infrastructure sector, Paul Hill, Andy’s expertise in the energy space will help support the firm and its lawyers in driving forward the energy & infrastructure sector strategy, which is part of the wider corporate sector strategy.

This is one of several sector-driven appointments for Browne Jacobson’s corporate sector in recent months which includes leading Dubai based General Counsel (GC), Anneliese Reinhold as the firm’s first Non-Executive Chair of its corporate sectoral strategy board. It also underpins the firm’s O’Shaped commitments to driving for effective change, across the legal landscape and the industries that it supports, following its partnership with the organisation earlier in the year.

Declan Cushley, said: “I am delighted to bring Andy in as our latest NED who will further strengthen our growing Energy & Infrastructure sector. Andy has vast experience across the energy, infrastructure, M&A and private equity markets and has worked with some big ticket clients across the globe in successfully executing their strategies around energy transition, as well as advising on the huge business benefits that digital disruptive tech like AI and machine learning can bring. He is well respected in the professional services and energy sectors for having his finger on the pulse so he will be great addition to the group.”

Paul Hill added: “Whilst recent years have posed a variety of unprecedented challenges both domestically and internationally, there is real momentum surrounding the energy transition which is presenting significant growth opportunities. The need, and indeed urgency, for E&I projects and investment into clean technology (including its innovation, development and scale up), renewable energy and associated infrastructure is continuing to grow rapidly. It is the right time to have Andy come on board and, with his extensive energy expertise, help us to be even more effective when supporting our clients to navigate the challenges and grasp the opportunities that are features of a transformational period in the E&I sphere.”

Andy commented: “Browne Jacobson is known in the legal sector for delivering finely tuned, smart, tailored legal advice to its broad client base and also has a great reputation for taking a truly partnership approach with its clients. It’s these qualities, along with the team’s ambitions to be even more deep rooted in the Energy & Infrastructure sector and to being front and centre of the big societal issues that matter most to their clients including net-zero and the wider ESG agenda that gives them their USP. I am delighted to be joining that offering.”

Browne Jacobson’s leading Energy & Infrastructure sector team delivers constructive, innovative and pragmatic solutions and services underpinned by asset and sector level expertise to its domestic and international client portfolio which includes sponsors, equity investors, financiers, corporates, Government/public sector clients, construction companies, developers, landowners and energy purchasers.

The dedicated practice is made up of expert lawyers and sector-aligned team that advise on broad range of legal issues across a range of sectors including renewables (including wind, solar and tidal), hydrogen, water, waste, district heating, power generation and storage, electric vehicles/associated charging infrastructure, oil and gas, nuclear and utilities, in each case across a variety of funding models (including PFI/PPP).
