Browne Jacobson and the National Association of Head Teachers publish new guidance for faith schools faced with joining or becoming an academy trust

10 November 2023

New guidance is published this week to provide information about what it means for a faith school to become an academy or to join a trust.

Developed jointly by Browne Jacobson and the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT), the guidance entitled ‘Understanding Faith Academy Trusts’ is designed to provide senior leaders in faith schools, with factual information about the implications and mechanics of academy status – aiming to assist anybody involved in conversations around legal and governance structures relating to their faith school.

As the second in a suite of discussion tools for educators, this new guidance expands on the original advice ‘Understanding Academy Trusts’ published earlier this year, outlining the nuances facing faith schools specifically when joining or becoming an academy trust, such as the role of the trust board and the impact which the relevant faith organisation has on decision making in faith academy trusts.

Vicki Hair, Associate at Browne Jacobson, says:

“With how useful this year’s 'Understanding Academy Trusts' guidance has proven to be, we felt it vital that faith schools of all denominations feel supported and have advice specific to their governance structures. It’s been fantastic to work with the NAHT once again to ensure that all schools are fully informed on the impact of joining or becoming an academy trust.”
