Welcome news for sixth form colleges looking to academise
The Government has accepted calls from sixth form colleges to reopen the option to become academies.
The Government has accepted calls from sixth form colleges to reopen the option to become academies. This option was available from November 2015 when the then Chancellor George Osborne announced a change of policy. However the opportunity was linked to the Area Based Reviews and in effect ceased in March of this year.
This announcement has been accompanied by new guidance which confirms that colleges looking to convert must either create or join a Multi-Academy Trust and it also confirms that the Conversion Support Grant of £25,000 will be available. Colleges contemplating converting should consider the pros and cons of moving into the academy world but this time around they will have the time to make a fully informed decision.
