Commenting on the publication of a review by the Migration Advisory Committee into the UK’s graduate visa route for international students, Nathalie Jacoby-Danesh, Partner in the higher education team at Browne Jacobson, said: “We welcome the report of the Migration Advisory Committee and its key findings. Our higher education clients tell us that the declining recruitment of international students is of great concern.
“International student fees are hugely important to the financial sustainability of universities, which is in turn integral to the quality of education delivered to domestic students and the wider economic benefits of universities, stemming from skills development and innovation.
“At a time when universities are seeking to turn cutting-edge research into viable commercial opportunities – a key thread in the Government’s stated ambition for Britain to be a global science and technology superpower by 2030 – the retention of graduates, whether British or foreign nationals, will be vital to getting start-ups off the ground.
“It’s important we do not limit the inward investment pull that universities offer to their local areas. We are working with a European higher education institution that wants to establish a campus in London, giving UK employers access to young talent, but immigration rules are making these arrangements difficult.”
