With significant changes to employment law proposed by the new government being pitched as “the biggest upgrade to rights at work for a generation”, we explore what this will mean for schools and trusts.
Even prior to the election and the publication of their manifesto, Labour had already set out wide-ranging plans for employment and have since committed to implementing that plan in full. The key features of the plan include:
- Recruiting 6,500 new expert teachers in key subjects.
- Ending fire and rehire and banning exploitative zero hours contracts.
- Ensuring the independent Low Pay Commission account for the cost of living.
- Removing National Minimum Wage age bands.
- Introducing a Race Equality Act and ethnicity pay gap reporting.
- Taking further action to reduce the gender pay gap.
- Introducing day one rights to parental leave, sick pay and unfair dismissal protection.
- Creating a Single Enforcement Body for upholding employment rights.
