Improving maternity safety: Insights from MNSI’s annual recommendation report

18 December 2024
Lucy Ibson

The Maternity and Neonatal Investigations (MSNI) has published its first annual report of maternity safety recommendations from investigations the organisation conducted during 2023-2024 and which sets out the proposed plans for change in 2025, with plans to assist Trusts in improving the safety of maternity care for all women and birthing people.

The report should help NHS Trusts to align their practices with the findings and recommendations derived from real-world investigations, promoting a proactive culture of safety and quality care in maternity services.

The report highlights key themes that arose from their investigations including strengthening communication within care teams, refining protocols for handling emergencies, and enhancing the monitoring and support provided to patients throughout pregnancy and childbirth. By implementing these measures, maternity services can take significant steps toward fostering safer practices, addressing recurring challenges, and ensuring high-quality care is consistently delivered across the NHS. Specific measures recommended include multidisciplinary training, implementing standardised emergency drills, and ensuring timely escalation of care when complications arise.

The MNSI hopes that this annual report will become a cornerstone for reflection, leaning, and improvement across NHS maternity services, contributing to a safer environment for mothers and babies nationwide.
