Homes England, the government’s housing accelerator, has partnered with two local authorities, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and the Association of South Essex Local Authorities, in a new Strategic Place Partnership (SPP) which is designed to align with the government’s levelling up agenda by delivering new homes in the regions. It aims to use strategic and tactical interventions to enable growth in employment and skills, life chances and health and wellbeing in local areas.

The SPP is not designed to suit every region. It will focus on sub-regions with ambitious proposals and a strong pipeline of potential locations for the delivery of economic growth, affordable homes and town centre regeneration projects will be key.

This new model demonstrates Homes England’s wider ambitions to accelerate the delivery of new homes and to ensure more people have access to better homes in the right places.

If successful, the model will boost the work done between Homes England and local authorities in growth and regeneration, providing many opportunities for strategic partnerships with those in the affordable housing sector and transform communities. What is interesting to see is the variety of different approaches and schemes that Homes England is willing to use in different areas across the country, demonstrating its flexibility and broader thinking around levelling-up.
